strawberry smash cocktail recipe

The concept for this cocktail came to me in a flash of brilliance (or desperation?) around 5 oโ€™clock last Friday. Iโ€™m sure it has been done before, but itโ€™s delightfully simple and postworthy nonetheless.

I must warn you that this drink is dangerously delicious; I took a sip, snapped some photos, and slurped it right down. Cheers! If you love strawberry cocktails, donโ€™t miss myย Strawberry-Infused Mint Julep and Frozen Strawberry Margaritas.

Summery cocktail made with strawberries, basil, vodka, club soda and a drizzle of honey. Cheers!

Ingredients

Per cocktail

  • 5 ripe strawberries, leafy ends removed
  • 5 fresh basil leaves
  • 1 medium lemon, juiced (plus more for garnish)
  • Drizzle honey
  • 1 ยฝ ounces vodka
  • Club soda

Instructions

  1. In a mixing glass, thoroughly muddle strawberries with the basil.
  2. Squeeze in the juice of one lemon and a drizzle of honey.
  3. Stir in the vodka.
  4. Fill a collins glass with ice and pour your mixture into the glass. Top it off with club soda.
  5. Mix by pouring the drink back into your mixing glass, then back into your drinking glass. Garnish with lemon round and a strawberry.

Notes

Strained option: If you arenโ€™t down with chunks of smashed strawberry floating in your drink, just pour the mixture through a strainer, into a glass filled with ice.

    1. kate

It is amazing, and you can use the basil on your back porch to make it! Iโ€™ve been drinking the cheap wine we bought together. Yummm.

      1. kirsten

yay! i finished off the lighter one. you know, the one you can drink the whole bottle by yourself and still stand up? major selling point apparently. :)

btw, in the past week we made:
        soba noodle bowl
        kale salad
        ranier cherry mojito
        and strawberry cocktail

keep em coming. and i got my friend, evan (danโ€™s computer game playing friend) to put your blog on his daily blogs that he checks out since he loved the noodles so much. :)

        miss you!

        1. kate

Woah! Iโ€™m in awe that you made all of those recipes in the past week. I love it!

P.s. Did you notice a slight effervescence in that cheap wine? It was a little champagne like. Me likey.

Gorgeous girl you are on fire! Iโ€™m sorry if you literally are right now in summer heat (join Cookie by the fan), but I mean on here, your blog. Your photography and your recipes are just awesome. I will be trying this cocktail come spring here in Australia. Thanks for visiting my blog again too. I loved your tweets about flirting with the patagonia guy! Hilarious! And I love any Cookie sightings! Have a wonderful weekend.

    Heyโ€ฆ
    iโ€™ve had this drink beforeโ€” itโ€™s delish!
iโ€™m going to make it for a party this coming up weekend and want to make a pitcher of it.
Do you think you can give me measurements for a pitcher?

    1. Kate

Hey Megan, Iโ€™m sorry I didnโ€™t respond in time! Hope you managed to have a great party without my measurements.

  12. Shana Sutton

Wow! This recipe sounds fabulous! I love the simplicity of it. I have all the ingredients at home. I will definitely try it this weekend!
btw-i just discovered your blog and I love it!

  13. anuradha

    1. Denise

      Unbelievably delicious.

  14. Jen

I swear you are reading my mind. I keep coming up with recipe ideas and googling them, and there is Cookie and Kate with perfect, clean versions of everything I am searching for. Thank you for this amazing recipe. It was so refreshing and delicious!

  15. Cynthia

Do you think I could make a punch with this ?? Any suggestions on the amounts???

    1. Kate

Sorry for the slow response, Cynthia! This may not be the best punch candidate since club soda loses its fizz over time and the strawberry chunks will sink to the bottom.

  16. Eric Vasquez

This recipe is legit! A friend of mine sent me the recipe and I made a few last week. Really enjoyed it! Thanks for sharing!

  17. Kim

Honestly, the basil did nothing for this drink. I thought about pouring it out, but I didnโ€™t want to waste good vodka. I added some agave and that made it palatable. Leave out the basil and itโ€™s be similar to a strawberry lemonade.

    1. Kate

Iโ€™m sorry you didnโ€™t love this recipe. I appreciate your feedback, Kim.

    2. Kim

It was a very original idea. I did enjoy it more without the basil, it was very light. I have enjoyed many of your other recipes, thank you.
