pineapple avocado smoothie

Have you tried avocado in your smoothies? Hereโ€™s an ultra-creamy smoothie recipe made with avocado, pineapple, banana and coconut. Fresh orange and lime juice make it nicely zippy. This smoothie tastes like a tropical treatโ€”make one when you need an island vacation!

I particularly like this vegan smoothie because itโ€™s incredibly creamy and incorporates some healthy fat from the avocado. I like to treat it like dessert and eat it with a spoon.

Hot summer days call for refreshing frozen treats, and this homemade blended option is ready in minutes.

Avocado Smoothie Tips

Youโ€™ll find the full recipe below. Here are a few options and substitutions to make it suit your taste buds:

  • If you donโ€™t like the flavor of coconut, skip it.
  • Add a handful of fresh spinach to the blender for some healthy greens.
  • Include the optional ice-cold water if you want a smoothie thatโ€™s easier to sip through a straw, or if you have trouble blending the mixture. Omit it for an intensely creamy, sweet and tangy smoothie that is almost like a sorbet or light coconutty sherbet.
  • While you could add a scoop of vanilla protein powder to this smoothie, I donโ€™t recommend it. It covers up the bright tropical flavors, and they shine without it. Save the protein powders for a simpler smoothie.

This super creamy avocado smoothie offers bright, tropical flavors, including pineapple, orange, banana and coconut. This recipe yields 2 small smoothies (1 scant cup each) or 1 large; multiply as necessary.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium orange, peeled and seeds removed and torn into several pieces, or ยฝ cup orange juice
  • ยฝ medium ripe avocado
  • ยฝ cup frozen pineapple
  • ยฝ frozen banana, frozen in 1-inch chunks
  • ยผ cup ice-cold water (optional; omit for a thicker texture)
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons lime juice, to tasteย
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened shredded coconut
  • Small pinch of fine salt
  • Optional garnishes: 1 lime wedge and shredded unsweetened coconut

Instructions

  1. Combine all of the ingredients in a blender in the order listed, starting with the lesser amount of lime juice. Blend on low until the blender gains traction, then ramp up to the highest speed as soon as possible (or use your blenderโ€™s smoothie function, if it has one). Blend until the mixture is completely smooth and creamy.
  2. Taste, then add another squeeze of lime juice if you would like more zing, and blend again.
  3. Pour into a glass and enjoy promptly. If you want to make it look cute like the pictures, garnish with a lime wedge and a sprinkle of shredded unsweetened coconut.

Notes

Recipe adapted from Happy Healthy Lifeโ€™s Piรฑa-Vocado Smoothie.

Change it up: You could add a handful of fresh spinach for some added nutrition without significantly impacting the flavor.

  3. Linda

This is an interesting twist and what a great flavor idea! I havenโ€™t used avocado in a smoothie yet, but I certainly will now! I think it will compliment really nicely with the pineapple.

  8. Gwen

Nice flavor for a summer treat. This is probably the creamiest smoothie I have ever had. It has the consistency of yogurt.

    1. Kate

      Thanks, Gwen!

  9. Molly

I just tried this for the first time and all I can say is yum! The avocado makes it so creamy but you barely taste it, the banana and pineapple are the perfect combination for this tasty summer treat!

    1. Kate

Thanks, Molly! Iโ€™m happy to hear that you enjoyed the smoothie.

  10. Kat

Just made this! Didnโ€™t have coconut milk sadly but I had some plain yoghurt so I chucked that in with some honey to keep it from getting too tart. Perfect! Never tried avo in a smoothie before but Iโ€™m hooked! :)

    1. Kate

I bet itโ€™s great with yogurt! Thanks for commenting, Kat.

  14. Sara

Chiming in late, but I found this recipe and we have had it twice now. Itโ€™s delicious and creamy and the fruits cover the taste of the avocado so I can trick my picky eater! Love it!

    1. Kate

      Thanks, Sara!

  15. Neisha

I canโ€™t have bananas is there something I should use in place of it or just remove it from the mix?

    1. Kate

Hey Neisha! The bananas lend some sweetness and creaminess to the smoothie, but I do think it would still be great without them. You might add some almond milk to make up for the creaminess and/or some ice to make sure itโ€™s a frozen treat.

  19. Hannah

Really light and refreshing. I couldnโ€™t taste the avocado at all which is great for people who are scared of it in a smoothie. Definitely great to brighten up a cloudy spring day but I bet it would be equally great if the weather was nice too!

    1. Kate

      Thanks for your feedback, Hannah!

Delish! My toddler and I are under the weather with coughs and sore throats. This was a perfect smoothie! I added ยผ tsp chlorella/spirulina for green. Just enough to see but not taste.

    1. Kate

Iโ€™m glad this helped some! I hope your toddler is better now.
