What to Cook This November
Posted by Kathryne Taylor on November 1, 2024
November is here, and it’s just starting to feel like fall outside. Our three-year-old loved dressing up as Minnie Mouse (again) for Halloween yesterday. This time she was Queen Minnie! I love to pull out my old sewing machine for Halloween costumes, so I made her a cape to complete her outfit.
Below, you’ll find plenty of seasonal recipes that will sustain you between now and your Thanksgiving feast. This collection highlights healthy everyday recipes. Check out my Thanksgiving roundup if you’re planning your holiday menus. Stay tuned for new recipes coming your way shortly.
Apples
Apple Steel-Cut Oatmeal
Gluten free and vegan (see notes)
“We made the apple oatmeal on this cool morning here in Kansas…and it was perfect. Topped it with some almond butter and a swirl of maple syrup. My 3 year old ate most of my portion along with his. So, kid friendly, as well! Another recipe well done!” – Jamie
Beets
Simple Beet, Arugula and Feta Salad
Gluten free and easily vegan (skip the cheese)
“This is, quite literally, my new favorite salad! I have made it for several friends – who all have adored it – and have added it to my weekly food staples. I’ve never actually made it with pumpkin seed – I substitute pistachios instead, or omit the nuts altogether if I am not eating it right away, and the homemade balsamic is fantastic…YUMMMM!” – Franki
Broccoli
Parmesan Roasted Broccoli with Balsamic Drizzle
Gluten free
“I was just contemplating what to do with my Costco-sized bag of broccoli when this recipe arrived in my inbox. Thank you Kate! OMG this was phenomenal! I think even the veggie-averse would devour this dish and broccoli lovers rejoice!” – Lori
Cabbage
Simple Seedy Slaw
Gluten free and vegan
“Super easy to make and delicious, to boot! I forgot to pick up carrots so mine was cabbage only. Didn’t matter, my taste buds were beyond pleased.” – Sondra
Carrots
Healthy Carrot Muffins
Easily gluten free and easily vegan
“I made this recipe as directed and they came out incredibly delicious. I will definitely keep the recipe and add it to the repertoire! Thanks!” – Maryel
Cauliflower
Buffalo Cauliflower
Gluten free and easily vegan
“Just made this for our own little Super Bowl party of three and they came out perfect. Followed the instructions completely and they came out crunchy and really yummy. I love that I didn’t have to fry or air fry (we don’t have an air fryer). Perfect and easy.” – Doritie
Fennel
Autumn Kale Salad with Fennel and Honeycrisp
Gluten free
“Not sure why I waited so long to try this one – just exceptional. Made it for a supper club last night and it was such a hit. The fennel is such a perfect touch – cannot wait to use it more often. Luckily, I have enough ingredients to continue whipping this up throughout the week. Can kale salads please be your biggest chapter in the upcoming book? My absolute favourite!” – Emily
Hardy greens (arugula,
chard, collard greens & spinach)
Hearty Sweet Potato, Arugula & Wild Rice Salad with Ginger Dressing
Gluten free and easily vegan
“Wow – whoever said you can’t make friends with salad never tried this one. It’s sensational and thanks for the tip on toasting pumpkin seeds – never like them before and now they’re delicious! I halved the recipe and replaced half the oil with orange juice (watching fat intake) and looked forward to my 3 packed work lunches everyday. It was so good I’ve bought the book and recommended your blog to friends. (Colourful Beet this week) Thanks Kate!” – Heather
Kale
Quinoa Vegetable Soup with Kale
Gluten free and vegan
“I just found this recipe via pinterest! I made the soup yesterday and I absolutely love it!! Never thought of quinoa in soup but this makes so much sense! I am always looking for ways to add protein without adding meat so this is great and my whole family loves it! (I’m a college student by the way, not a mom, in case you couldn’t tell. lol) This soup is great for all ages!!” – Maya
Mushrooms
Portobello and Poblano Fajitas
Gluten-free
“These looked great so I made them for my meat eating family and they loved them!! I asked my hubby if he missed the meat and he actually said, “NO, these are delicious all by themselves”. Yay! I did like a bit more heat, so my hubby and I added some to our dishes. But the kids liked them just the way it was written.” – Belinda
Pears
Pear Cranberry Crisp
Gluten free and easily vegan (see note)
“This is fabulous! Started getting brown at 45 min. I agree that it would be great for breakfast too. I have never cooked with pears before and will now add them to my winter fruit favorites. Thanks!” – Leslie
Potatoes
Ultra Crispy Baked Potato Wedges
Gluten-free
“Thanks, Kate! I sent these to my husband to make for dinner and they were incredible! I’ve never been successful with getting a satisfying crunch on oven baked fries – this method was perfect! We’ll be making again and again.” – Courtney
Pumpkin
Pumpkin Oat Pancakes
Gluten free
“I made these pancakes for lunch today because I need to incorporate more oatmeal in my diet. They were so hearty and amazing. I daresay they were more filling than normal pancakes. A definite win!” – Hannah
Radishes
Lemony Lentil and Chickpea Salad with Radish and Herbs
Vegan and gluten free
“Hi again! Thanks so much for this one! I made it for my husband and I and we loved it so much we made it for a recent housewarming and everyone went wild… Sent this one to a few guests who had requested a copy! Thanks!” — Krystal
Sweet Potatoes
Sweet Potato & Black Bean Tacos with Avocado-Pepita Dip
Gluten free and easily vegan
“Made these tacos for dinner on Friday. They were delicious and so easy to prepare. Even the carnivores loved them and couldn’t stop raving about the sweet potatoes. Thank you for expanding my menu options and making it possible for me to prepare just 1 dinner now instead of 2.” – Kristen
Winter Squash
Roasted Butternut Squash Risotto
Gluten free and easily vegan (see notes)
“My husband used this as inspiration for my birthday dinner Tuesday and it was so so so good! Even better have been the leftovers which means more days of no cooking! (I love to cook, but a break now and again is nice especially during birthday week). I love leftover risotto with a fried egg over the top. Thanks so much! Love anything I make from your site. :)” – Beth

Hi Kate. Just want to tell you that your website keeps going funny – I’m not sure if it’s just me or a wider problem. It zooms in so it’s just the title and the scrolling button disappears and I cannot move. It might only be me though – just thought you might want to know.
Well, that certainly shouldn’t be happening! I haven’t heard from anyone else experiencing that problem. Maybe try clearing your browser’s cache and see if that fixes it?
Hmm. I cleared my cache and so on, but still had the same problem. However, this time I can read it when I refresh the page. Oh, well. I love your recipes by the way and closely follow your blog!

Greetings from yet again another upcoming lockdown UK. I am thinking of you and poor Cookie… My husband was taken seriously ill very suddenly last August (he was in intensive care for over 2 weeks) and then later diagnosed with aggressive lymphoma. Fifteen months later we are in a better place after intensive treatment. Stay positive Katie and big big virtual hugs to you both I am about to look at some supper ideas from your gorgeous cookbook…
Hi Nina, I’m so sorry to hear about your husband. How very hard. In your time of grief, your kind words mean so much!
Aaaah thanks for the reply… my words are heartfelt and sincere…stay strong and positive. That little ‘Cookie’ is a fighter… both keep safe xps we are in lockdown again from tomorrow (5.11.20) for a month here in the UK. I will be using your amazing cookbook…. it’s well thumbed! Gorgeous book. Keep your faith up… x
Kate, I’m so sorry to hear about Cookie’s diagnosis but I have heard good things about chemo for dogs and how they tolerate it better than we humans do. Sending good vibes for her quick recovery.
